Astronomy Professor Guillermo Gonzalez from Iowa State University has been denied tenure, despite his outstanding academic record, due to his beliefs in intelligent design. I guess to be accepted into academia these days, one must deny his/her belief system--at least this was the main objection the reviewing board took into consideration when they denied Dr. Gonzalez's tenure.
Obviously, some of the reviewing board faculties might have seen or heard of Dr. Gonzalez's video, 'The Priveleged Planet,' which points to intelligent design. As crazy as this unspoken objection may sound, Dr. Gonzalez never taught intelligent design in his classes nor worked on this video during his working hours at the university. This video was hailed publicly when evangelicals and christian scientists honored it for its aparent focus.

To deny tenure on the basis of beliefs must be reconsidered. Dr. Gonzalez has written 68 peer-review scientific papers, not to mentioned co-authoring college level astronomy text book published by Cambridge press. To qualify for tenure at the Iowa State University, a candidate had to have written 15 peer-review scientific papers. Dr. Gonzalez wrote 350% more than the requirement and was denied.
Jesus said in Matthew 10:22, "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved." May God guide Dr. Gonzalez as he looks forward to his appeal. May He be filled with God's wisdom as he shares his heart, and point others to the Designer of all things, the Lord Almighty.
